Julius Caesar was born on 12th July in about 100BC. His father (Gaius) was a government official called praetor. His mother Amelia came from an old and powerful noble family. Caesar's parents weren't very rich. He grew up with a strict, plain family life. They lived in the city of Rome and their house was comfortably but simply furnished. Aurelia had a nursemaid to help her raise her son and his two younger sisters.

It was normal for the Roman parents to choose husbands and wives for their children. While he was a boy, his father chose a future bride for him called Cossutia. When his father died, Caesar broke off the engagement. Instead, he married a woman called Cornelia. Their wedding was about 85BC and their daughter was born a year later. Before he left Rome, Caesar's wife Cornelia had died from an illness. On his return the next year he married again. His new wife Pompeia, was the cousin of a famous general called Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus and the granddaughter of Caesar's old enemy Sulla. She was so rich and she helped her husband buy his way into power.

In the end, Rome ruled one of the greatest empires of the world had ever seen. The Roman language, Latin and the Roman ideas and skills dominated Europe and much of the middle East for more than 500 years. Today the Roman empires Julius Caesar created is still one of the world's greatest civilizations.
